New dads : Fatherhood redefined
03. 10. 2024

The past few years, the father's role has been remarkably transformed. Indeed, the time when the father was seen as an authoritative and distant figure is over, fatherhood is now showcased in a new light with dads actively participating in the daily life and education of their children, just like moms.

With the feminist revolution and the establishment of progressive gender equality, fathers have had to step up and relieve women's daily life. It is not yet perfect, but we can celebrate this major sociological advancement.

So yes, at Enfance Paris, we talk a lot about moms, but that doesn’t mean we don’t think about you dads !

How has dad's responsibility evolved throughout history ?

  • Before : Women at home and men at work

The structure of the traditional family model was very rigid. Children were entirely managed by women, who took care of their education and care.

Meanwhile, men were responsible for the family, taking on 100% of the expenses by often working long hours outside the family home. This model lasted a long time, supported by strong cultural and social norms.

In France, the first paternity leave was only established in 2002, giving fathers two weeks' paid leave to care for their newborn child. This was a crucial first step in raising awareness of the importance of fathers' role from the birth of a child. Negotiations are currently in progress to prolong this leave to provide additional support for families. Sweden is a good example, with 90 days' paternity leave !

What are the characteristics of new dads ?

  • Today : Active participation of dads in children's lives

New dads play an important role in their children's daily lives. They are involved in care, play and education. This participation goes beyond classic obligations and includes sharing domestic and parenting tasks.

New fathers realize that their participation is essential to ensure their children's balanced development, and they don't hesitate to take parental leave, participate in school reunions and get involved in all their children's activities. Knowing that education by example is crucial, we can hope that the sharing of tasks will no longer be an issue for generations to come.

  • Emotion and sensitivity

Another striking aspect of new dads is their ability to express their emotions and establish a strong emotional bond with their children. They know how essential attachment and emotional sensitivity are to their children's well-being.

Modern fathers are present not only physically, but also emotionally, offering constant support and attentive listening.

  • The challenges faced by new dads

However, this redefinition of fatherhood does not come without challenges.

New dads often have to face stereotypes and pressure from society. There are still entrenched perceptions that men are not as capable or natural as women when it comes to child care.

What's more, the workplace is not always flexible, and fathers can face difficulties when they want to take parental leave or adapt their working hours to better balance professional and family life.

New dads are now essential actors in the education and development of their children, actively participating in family life and combating stereotypes to create a more balanced and harmonious environment.

Although challenges remain, the progress made is already significant, and every step forward contributes to equality and the well-being of all families.

At Enfance Paris, we salute these new dads for their dedication. Dads, you are doing a wonderful job !
