Baby's first bath
02. 12. 2024
Water is the most reassuring element for babies because it’s the one of its mother’s womb. Bath should be a moment for relaxation, comfort and gentleness. Water is something familiar for a baby, you need to be calm and relaxed so that the moment is for him too. To avoid apprehensions and be as confident as possible, you need to be well prepared, so here is a list of things to check and do for baby's first bath. Above all it is a moment of sensory sharing between you and your baby, a time for getting to know each other gently and creating a connection.
Bathroom
The bathroom’s temperature should be between 22°C and 25°C. Also, remember to close windows to avoid draughts and the baby getting cold when you take him out of the bath.
The bath
Choose if possible, a baby bath adapted to your shower or bath. It’s important that you feel comfortable so that the bath is as relaxing as possible for your baby.
Water
The water’s temperature must not exceed 37°C. You can check with a thermometer before putting the baby in it. A little tip if you don’t have one : put your elbow in the water and the temperature should be comfortable for you. Fill the bath between 10cm and 15cm maximum, which will be enough for the baby to lie down.
Material
Have everything you need during and after the bath close at hand : the towel, cleansing product, glove or sponge, baby’s change and clean clothes. The best , if possible, is to have an area close to the bath where baby can be changed or dressed after the bath. Don’t forget that a newborn loses heat more quickly and can catch a cold faster.
Security
We can’t say it enough, you should never leave a baby alone in his bath. If you really need to leave the bathroom, wrap your baby in a towel and take him out of the bath.
Hygiene
To avoid the stress of holding baby while washing him, we recommend that for the first baths you simply wash your hands with our 0-3 years soap directly in the bath water. This will make the bath's water soft and slightly oily so there is no need to rub the soap him. If his nappy is dirty, remember to clean his bottom before bathing so that the water doesn't get dirty. Depending on your child’s hair mass, you can start using our gentle shampoo for babies aged 0-3 years once or twice a week. If you prefer liquid soap, our extra gentle body and face wash is suitable for baby’s fragile skin, its soft, silky gel texture is easy to rinse off.
Gesture
Hold your baby firmly in one hand and soap his body with the other. Always wash your baby from cleanest to dirtiest part of his body, starting with the head and ending with the bottom.
Frequency
If you don’t have time or the will, there is no need to bathe a newborn everyday. Washing his bottom at each nappy change and a quick wash with a glove of the body and face is sufficient. If your baby likes this moment of relaxation, give him a bath everyday but not for too long, because of the limescale in the water, we recommend a maximum of 10 minutes.
Bath time
Above all, bath time should be a moment of calm and well-being for both baby and parent. Bathing baby in the evening seems to be the best time to relax after a long day and to help baby get ready for bed. It's best to give him a bath just before his meal if he's not hungry, or after, but wait a little until his digestion is complete.
After the bath
Massage is a great way to connect with your child. A calm, relaxing moment to complete bath time. Massage your child with our 0-3 years dry nourishing oil to protect their fine and fragile skin. Your baby will be relaxed before going to sleep. We also have a baby massage guide available upon request to guide you through every step of this sensory experience.
We hope these tips will help you take your first steps as parents and we wish you lots of magical moments of sharing and gentleness when bathing your babies.
